Tending Your Fire: A Late Summer Check-In 🔥✨

I hope your adrenals are well and happy — yes, I know, straight to the point!

We’re now a fair way through summer, and it has been a long, full and energetic one so far. The light, sunshine and long days can feel incredibly charging and uplifting, but this point in the season is also a really good time to pause and check in with where your energy is actually at.

Are you feeling nourished and energised by the abundance of summer, or are you beginning to notice signs that you’ve been running a little too hot? Perhaps you’re feeling more tired, overstimulated, anxious, restless or simply like you’ve been running on empty.

This isn’t about dampening your fire — quite the opposite. It’s about noticing where things may have gone out of balance and learning how to harness the abundant energy around us so that it can feed and sustain you through autumn and winter, rather than being something you burn through all at once.

☀️ Summer: The Peak of the Cycle

This time of year represents the peak of a cycle. We can see this pattern everywhere. In the cycle of the day, midday is the point of greatest intensity. In the life of a project, there is a stage where things are in full flow — you are reaping the benefits of what you have created, while also working hard to keep everything moving. And in nature, summer is the season when everything is at its fullest and most abundant.

There is a lot of energy at the peak and that can be exhilarating, but it can also be overwhelming.

It’s interesting that we can sometimes experience more anxiety, panic or a sense of overwhelm at these times. When everything is turned up, our own systems can become turned up too. We can feel as though there is simply too much happening, too much energy, too much to keep up with.

In the cycle of the seasons, this peak is associated with the element of Fire. Fire is a wonderful metaphor for this energy. When it is balanced, it gives us warmth, vitality, enthusiasm, creativity and the energy to engage with life. But fire out of balance can become a force to be reckoned with — burning too hot, consuming our reserves and leaving us depleted.

So the invitation isn’t to put your fire out. It’s to tend to it and learn how to work with it.

Now is a particularly good time to notice what your own system is telling you. Where are you feeling energised and alive? Where are you feeling depleted? What have you been asking of yourself? And is there anything that needs a little more care, space or attention?

Looking after your adrenals and allowing yourself enough rest and recovery is one part of this. Another is becoming curious about what happens when feelings of overwhelm, fear or panic arise.

Rather than immediately trying to get rid of them, push them away or becoming frightened by the sensation itself, see if you can allow the feeling to move through you.

There is a useful idea that the initial physiological response of an emotion is relatively brief — often around 90 seconds — and that when a feeling continues beyond that, our thoughts, interpretations and stories are keeping the emotional response going.

So what happens if, for those first moments, you simply allow the sensation to be there?

You might notice your heart beating faster, your stomach tightening, your breath changing or a wave of heat moving through your body. Rather than adding “I can’t cope with this”, “What if this gets worse?” or “I need this to stop”, see if you can stay with the physical experience and let it move.

As you live through these final weeks of summer, enjoy the abundance without being consumed by it.

Take a moment to notice where you are in your own cycle. What is working well? What has become too much? Where might you need to slow down, replenish or create a little more space?

And perhaps most importantly, how can you take the vitality and abundance that summer offers and store some of that energy within yourself, so that it becomes something you can draw upon as the days begin to shorten and we move towards autumn and winter?

The Autumn Equinox in September brings us into a different phase — one of reflection, balance and gradually letting go. Now is a beautiful time to begin preparing for that transition, not by shutting down the energy of summer, but by consciously gathering what has nourished you and allowing it to become a resource for the seasons ahead.

So, to see you through the remainder of the summer, we wanted to gift you, our lovely readers, access to a practice from membership programme to help support your adrenals, reset your system and reboot your energy. I’ve also included a few links below to help you understand a little more about overwhelm, anxiety and panic, along with some practical tools you can use to enjoy these remaining summer days — and any other time in your life when you find yourself at a peak.

We also have new events coming up: A workshop all about the power of intention and a retreat at the beginning of October. I will also be starting regular fascia and energy reset classes in Lewes from September. Check out our Events page for more details and enjoy the summer resources below!

Keep your fire alive and remember to tend it. 🔥☀️
