I hope you’re all enjoying the full flush of spring - the season of assertive action, fresh starts, and forward momentum.

Here at Handpicked HQ, Hannah and I have been diving into some of the deeper qualities that sustain us when we finally put the rubber to the road. One duo that’s sparked a lot of conversation lately is. Discipline vs. Willpower. So, I thought I’d share a few thoughts...

Discipline vs. Willpower – So, What’s the Difference?

Well, officially, discipline is the ability to consistently follow a set of rules, habits, or standards over time, even when it’s hard. Willpower, on the other hand, is the mental strength to resist short-term temptations or urges in the moment.

For me, discipline is the quiet, steady, honest voice that keeps me grounded. It’s the one that delivers a dollop of truth when I need it: “No, it’s not Paula’s fault you went for the full fry-up… or fell into a taxi at 3am… or skipped your practice again.” (Though to be fair, Paula can be pretty persuasive when she wants to be.)

Discipline offers a quiet strength — a choice to take responsibility. It’s not flashy, but it sticks around. It builds self trust.

Willpower, by contrast, packs a punch. It’s loud, decisive, and leaves no room for argument. It’s the brute force that slams the fridge shut or powers you through the first 10 minutes of a dreaded workout. But it’s short-lived. The foundation isn’t there to truly enjoy the satisfaction of achievement,  instead, it can leave you glancing over your shoulder, waiting for the next battle to begin.

One of the most powerful shifts we see when coaching is when someone starts to cultivate discipline over willpower.

Willpower might win you a few early battles — but discipline builds the kind of foundation that keeps serving you, especially when your survival system is pulling you back toward the familiar, because “familiar” gets filed under “safe” in your body — even if “safe” isn’t happy, healthy, or even remotely interesting.

I often liken willpower to the jailor — the one who thinks they’re free and powerful, while in reality, they’re stuck standing at the door, constantly on guard, always alert for the next breakout. Willpower is rigid, reactive. It’s built on control and tension and, in the long run exhausts you.

Discipline, on the other hand, is built through exploration, curiosity, and choice. It’s not about force, it’s about trust. Discipline keeps gently reminding you of your intention and giving you a leg up when you need it.

When discipline is working well, it brings a deep sense of lasting satisfaction. You feel safer in your own body — not because you’ve locked yourself down, but because you’ve built the strength to keep showing up for yourself, again and again.

When discipline is doing her job, the reward is intrinsic.

You don’t do things to earn a gold star or someone’s approval.

You do it because it feels good — and that feeling becomes the fuel for the next step.

And now for a little heads up:

No matter how much you're enjoying a new routine or practicing a new way of thinking or being, your survival system will still rear its head from time to time. It’s only doing its job of coaxing you back to the version of yourself it knows, the one you’ve been for so long. Familiar = safe, even if it’s no longer aligned. It's the voice that whispers to you that you can start tomorrow, that you really won't regret this in the morning, the new stuff is boring/stupid/delusional.

And here is where Deidre Discipline can step in to calmly and ever so politely tell Willy Will power where to shove that unhelpful advice. (Well… that’s how it works for me.)

Deidre Discipline doesn’t shout — she just raises her eyebrow and says REALLY? She can be just as annoying as Paula but at least you get to choose!

Cultivating discipline is an art — a practice that grows and flexes with you, helping you stay true to yourself as you evolve.

You can do this by creating a container for reflection as you build your relationship with yourself and life, taking consistent, intentional steps that align with what is really true to you.

At A Handpicked Life, our membership platform is designed to be the container where that kind of growth can thrive. Inside, you’ll find a treasure trove of support:

 ✨ Group coaching calls

 ✨ Specialty workshops

 …and so much more.

Curious? Take a tour of our membership program - we have added an additional non-recorded group coaching call each month for coaching, sharing and support since we recorded this video! You can sign up to the membership here. You can also visit our YouTube channel for tons of practical tips (and yes, please like and subscribe).
